Commonly available to plants as nitrate in aquariums. Fish waste and feeding can contribute significantly.
Aquarium plants
Aquarium plants need nutrients, but that does not mean every tank needs heavy dosing. The useful approach is to understand where nutrients come from, what the plants actually use, and whether your setup needs liquid fertiliser, root tabs, both, or neither.
The basics
Light drives growth, but plants also need carbon and a range of nutrients. Some nutrients come from fish food, waste, tap water and substrate. Others may need to be added deliberately.
Macronutrients
Commonly available to plants as nitrate in aquariums. Fish waste and feeding can contribute significantly.
Usually available as phosphate. It is essential for plant growth and energy transfer.
Important for normal plant function and often added through comprehensive aquarium fertilisers.
Micronutrients
Plants also require trace elements such as iron, manganese, boron and others in much smaller quantities. Comprehensive fertilisers often include a balanced mixture of these micronutrients.
More trace elements are not automatically better. Excess dosing is unnecessary and can make troubleshooting harder.
Liquid fertiliser
Mosses, floating plants and many stem plants can access nutrients directly from the water. Liquid fertiliser is therefore a practical way to provide missing nutrients.
A comprehensive fertiliser can simplify dosing by combining several nutrients into one product.
Root tabs
Plants such as Cryptocoryne and many heavy root feeders can benefit from fertiliser placed beneath the substrate. Root tabs slowly release nutrients in the root zone.
Root tabs are especially useful when the substrate itself contains little plant nutrition.
Which method?
Floating plants, mosses and many stem plants often benefit most directly from liquid fertiliser.
Cryptocoryne, swords and similar rooted plants may benefit strongly from root tabs.
Many aquariums use a moderate liquid fertiliser alongside occasional root tabs for heavy root feeders.
A tank with only a few slow-growing plants may need very little additional fertiliser.
Fish waste
Fish food enters the tank and eventually contributes nutrients through waste and decomposition. In a stocked aquarium, nitrate and phosphate may already be present in useful amounts.
This is why two visually similar planted tanks can need very different fertiliser routines.
Shrimp tanks
Planted shrimp tanks can still be fertilised, but avoid unnecessary overdosing and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific product.
Trace amounts of some metals are plant nutrients, but concentrated exposure can be harmful. The word “contains copper” on its own does not tell you whether a correctly dosed fertiliser is unsafe; dose and chemical form matter.
Deficiencies
Yellowing, holes, pale new growth and stunted plants can be linked to nutrient problems, but similar symptoms can also result from lighting, CO₂, damaged roots, transition melt or poor conditions.
Algae
Algae problems are usually about imbalance. Excessive lighting, unstable CO₂, weak plant growth, overfeeding and poor maintenance can all contribute.
Completely starving plants of nutrients can make the situation worse by weakening the plants that would otherwise compete for resources.
Dosing
Use the manufacturer's recommended dose as a sensible starting point. A heavily planted, high-light aquarium may eventually need a different routine from a lightly planted low-tech tank.
Water changes
Regular water changes help manage dissolved waste and prevent the aquarium from becoming an uncontrolled accumulation of everything being added.
A good fertiliser routine works alongside maintenance, not instead of it.
Common mistakes
A simple beginner approach
For a basic planted aquarium, start with hardy plants, moderate lighting and normal fish or shrimp care. If growth suggests more nutrition is needed, add a suitable comprehensive liquid fertiliser at the recommended rate.
Use root tabs for established root feeders where appropriate. Then watch the aquarium for several weeks before making major changes.
