Aquarium Lighting

Aquarium lighting is less about making the tank as bright as possible and more about giving plants enough usable light for long enough each day. Too little light can limit growth. Too much can make algae problems much easier to create.

Light is one part of the plant-growth equation.

Plants also need carbon, nutrients and suitable conditions. Increasing light without improving the other limiting factors does not automatically produce better growth.

More light creates more demand. A brighter tank can push plants to grow faster, which means they also need enough nutrients and carbon to keep up.

The light does not need to be on all day.

A photoperiod is simply the amount of time the aquarium light stays on each day. For many planted aquariums, a moderate and consistent schedule is a better starting point than an extremely long one.

If algae is becoming a problem, reducing an excessively long light period is often one of the first sensible adjustments.

Leaving the light on longer is not free plant growth. Plants can only use additional light if the rest of the system can support the increased demand.

Brightness should match the plants you keep.

Low light

Suitable for many hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern and Java Moss.

Moderate light

Gives more plant options while still working well in many low-tech planted aquariums.

High light

Can support demanding growth but often works best with stronger nutrient management and injected CO₂.

Too much light

Often shows up as persistent algae when plant growth, nutrients and carbon cannot keep pace.

Light has farther to travel in deeper tanks.

A light that performs well over a shallow aquarium may not provide the same intensity at the substrate of a much deeper tank. Tank height, light spread and mounting height all affect what actually reaches the plants.

Plants need usable wavelengths, but appearance matters too.

Modern aquarium LEDs are usually designed to provide a usable range of light for plants while making fish and plants look natural. Extremely unusual colour settings are not automatically better for growth.

For most beginners, choosing a reputable planted-aquarium light and adjusting intensity and duration is more useful than obsessing over individual spectrum graphs.

Surface plants can shade everything underneath.

Salvinia and other floating plants can be useful, but dense surface coverage can reduce the amount of light reaching submerged plants.

Thin floating growth regularly if plants below begin stretching, slowing down or losing lower leaves.

Moderate light is often your friend.

A low-tech tank without injected CO₂ generally benefits from a more restrained lighting approach. Plants grow more slowly, but the system can be easier to balance.

Stronger light makes carbon limitation more obvious.

In high-light planted aquariums, injected CO₂ is commonly used because plant demand for carbon becomes much higher. Without enough available carbon, growth may stall while algae benefits from the imbalance.

Algae is often a symptom, not the root problem.

Excess light duration, high intensity, nutrient imbalance, poor maintenance and weak plant growth can all contribute to algae.

Reducing light can help, but it works best when combined with sensible feeding, maintenance and plant care rather than treating lighting as the only cause.

Consistency is easier when the light controls itself.

A simple timer keeps the photoperiod consistent even when your own schedule changes. This is one of the cheapest and most useful upgrades for a planted aquarium.

Plants may tell you when they are not getting enough.

These signs can also have other causes, so check nutrients and overall plant health before changing the light dramatically.

The tank may look bright while the system falls out of balance.

What causes lighting problems most often.

Start moderate, then adjust slowly.

Use a timer, choose a moderate photoperiod, and keep the intensity suitable for the plants you actually own. Watch how the aquarium responds for a while before changing several settings.

Change one thing at a time. If you change intensity, photoperiod, fertiliser and CO₂ together, you will not know which change helped or caused the problem.
